Help Us Grow

This year, Then Came Spring is looking to expand operations onto more unused land in our neighbourhood (Swansea/Bloor West Village). We are looking for FULL SUN (at least six hours) front and side lawns with access to water that we can turn into beautiful cut flower gardens. The work and expenses fall on our shoulders – we will remove sod, add compost, cover crops, and mulch, and plant a wide variety of beautiful and pollinator friendly plants. Watch your yard transform from a dull lawn to an urban oasis, teeming with butterflies and birds!

Community land partners will receive a 15% discount on any flowers they wish to purchase (excluding subscriptions), as well as three “thank you” bouquets throughout the season.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Every garden is a bit different, but you will see us planting varieties that are bred specifically to be used as cut flowers - dahlias, zinnias, phlox, lisianthus, snapdragons, and feverfew, for example. We also like to plant native species as companion plants to attract natural pest control (birds) to our spaces.

  • We require you to commit for at least one season (April to November). We would love to continue to partner with home owners over several years, which allows us to add perennials to the site.

  • We ask that as part of our agreement, you do not cut or tend to the flowers. Many varieties need to be cut in a specific way to encourage regrowth and long stems. Our experts are here to tend to the garden’s needs while you enjoy it’s beauty!

  • Our team is generally three people at most, often just one. We don’t use loud tools (minus the occasional lawn mower!) and try our best to be neither seen nor heard by home owners. We find it best to operate in side and back yards to avoid intruding on anyone’s personal space.
